Bob CollinsThere are probably a lot of high school tennis teams who would love to be 203-1 in tournaments, but the Grand Forks’ Red River High School isn’t one of them.
West Fargo Sheyenne High School knocked off Red River with a 3-2 victory in the championship of the East Region team tournament yesterday, the Fargo Forum reports.
That’s the first loss for Red River since a 2001 state championship tournament against a school in Bismarck.
Dozens of kids have paraded through their high school years at Red River without knowing what it’s like to lose.
“I don’t think we played our best tennis this weekend in all three matches — not just the one we got beat in,” Red River coach Greg LaDouceur told the paper. “Sheyenne is a very good team. They deserve everything they got. We put our best lineup out there and they beat us. Congrats to them. Take nothing away from their girls. They played better than we did today.”
“It hurts. It’s something that hasn’t happened for a long time. So, it stings a little bit. To stand out on the court and see the other team celebrate, I hope that hurt them a little bit. I hope we remember that next weekend when we play.”
