For the first time, the coach of a girl’s high school basketball team who was fired after his team beat another 100-0 has spoken up.
ESPN’s Outside the Lines broadcast the interview with Micah Grimes on Sunday, denying he tried to run up the score, and saying there was no reason to apologize for playing “good basketball.”
“I don’t want to tell my girls not to play. What I told them is ‘don’t take their heart,'” he said, rotating in three non-starters. By halftime it was 59-0.
He said if he had to do it again, he would probably “run the clock and turn the score off.”
“We’re not paying enough attention to what’s going on at Dallas Academy (the losing team),” Lz Granderson, an ESPN columnist said. “This isn’t the first time that team has ended a game scoring less than 10 points. The school only had 20 female students, 8 on the basketball team. Some of those students had never played basketball before. This is more about Dallas Academy. They cannot field a competitive squad at that school.”
