Back in 1978, farmer Patrick Benedict of Sabin was the “poster boy” for the American farmer on a Time Magazine cover.
He was killed yesterday when his car collided with a grain truck.
A few years ago he was interviewed by a farm policy Web site. You can find the audio here. He was asked what he would tell Time if the magazine were to do another story on him:
“The American public has lost touch with agriculture, but for the wrong reasons,” he sighed. “The vast majority of us are family farmers, working 18 hour days, struggling to turn a profit and keep food on our table. Even so, we’re better stewards of the land today than we’ve ever been in the past.”
