Even despite all the revelations about the occasional despicable act — forging mortgage documents, for example — it’s a rare day that banks are held accountable for their misdeeds.
In Ohio, a woman has found out, a bank can repossess the wrong house, remove all the contents, and authorities still won’t help.
Katie Barnett has the misfortune of living across the street from the house the bank actually owned in foreclosure.
She gave the bank a bill for $18,000 to replace her possessions, but the bank president sniffed at the thought.
“He got very firm with me and said, ‘We’re not paying you retail here, that’s just the way it is,’” Barnett said. “I did not tell them to come in my house and make me an offer. They took my stuff and I want it back.”
