It’s a powerful ad that the National Congress of American Indians produced earlier this year to oppose the name of the Washington Redskins. Tonight, it will air in seven major markets (not Minneapolis) during the NBA Finals game between San Antonio and Miami.
The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, a small group located north of San Francisco, is footing the bill for the broadcasts, according to the Washington Post.
“It’s just a time to get people thinking about putting an end to outward hatred and using sports as a tool to focus on racism,” Chairman Marshall McKay says.
The NBA, which moved swiftly to oust a racist owner, stands in contrast to the NFL, where a team owner and its commissioner have denied that Redskins is a racist name.
