Word has filtered from the mountains of North Carolina that Brasstown will not be able to drop a possum to mark the beginning of the new year. The judge said if the convenience store owner with the idea gets a waiver from North Carolina wildlife officials, it still might be a possum-possible event.
It’s not like the possum is thrown off a building, however. It’s lowered in a plexiglass box as men dressed as women — there are 1,386 people who call Brasstown home — dance on stage.
In the summer, the Legislature in North Carolina changed existing law to allow the possum drop, making an exception to cruelty-to-animal statutes.
Opponents say the possum is likely to die within days of being released by the possum drop committee.
