Bob CollinsIt turns out we didn’t see the end of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke‘s political career after his conviction and prison term on felony charges.
He announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate today.
“The New York Times admitted that my platform became the GOP mainstream and propelled Republicans to control of Congress,” he said in his online announcement. “They sold us out. I’m overjoyed to see Donald Trump. And most Americans embrace most of the issues that I’ve championed for years.”
“Thousands of special interest groups stand up for African Americans, Mexican Americans, Jewish Americans, etc. etc. The fact is that European Americans need at least one man in the United States Senate — one man in the Congress — who will defend their rights and heritage,” Duke said.
Duke didn’t say under what party he’d run for the vacant Senate seat. The Associated Press reports he’s a registered Republican. Louisiana has open primaries.
Prison is not a bar to the U.S. Senate, which still could vote to expel Duke if he were to be elected.
It’s unlikely he will be; Eleven others have already filed to run and seven — mostly Republicans — report considerable fundraising .
