Jetpack! Get your jetpack here!

It’s a jetpack that debuted in 2008 at the big airshow in Oshkosh, which I wrote about at the time, and was so intrigued by it that I spent the company’s cash and called inventor Glen Martin in New Zealand for the late Future Tense program. It was a really great interview.

You have to admire Martin’s pluck, but I fully expected his idea would disappear off to the land where good, impractical ideas go to die.

It didn’t.

Martin says the jetpack could go on sale next year, according to the Wall St. Journal.

It’s worth noting, however, that Martin’s original plan was to deliver the first jetpack to a customer four years ago.

If it takes off — no pun intended — it’ll be good news for a Minnesota business. The emergency parachutes that will be installed in it are made in South St. Paul.

It’ll likely be used first for rescue crews of some sort, but eventually there’ll be a recreational version.

Martin didn’t set a price on the jetpack when I talked to him five years ago. Now he has. It’ll cost “at least” $150,000.
