Roger Hanson is the kind of guy who can make you root for a relentless, face-peeling, bitter cold snap.
Against the odds of a warming winter, Hanson has decided to try again to build a massive ice tower on Barker’s Island in Superior, after the one he was constructing for a big festival and light show this week collapsed.
Since it turned into the most famous pile of ice in Superior’s history, Hanson has been silent on his Facebook page but he tells the Duluth News Tribune his work isn’t done.
“We intend to move forward with our original goal of creating a signature winter event in Superior,” said Mayor Bruce Hagen. “Our partner, National Bank of Commerce, has agreed to continue its sponsorship of light/fireworks shows for the community.”
Once the tower is repaired, Hanson plans to continue peppering the work with pinpoint sprays of water from the St. Louis Bay, turning frozen liquid into art.
“I’m not a quitter,” Hanson said. “My work here is not done.”
Funded by National Bank of Commerce, Events Specialties is modifying the light shows for the structure. The light shows, a bonfire and vendors will be available at the Barker’s Island Festival Park Feb. 14, 21 and 28. The “Meet the Iceman” talks with Hanson will continue at 2 p.m. each Saturday through February on Barker’s Island.
