Gavin Quimby saved Winona, Minn., once upon a time.
He helped the high school team score the winning touchdown, he put out a fire at an elementary school, he caught a purse snatcher on the city’s mean streets.
Coincidentally, he did all of it on Super-Gav Day in Winona, when the city stopped what it was doing to give a kid fighting metachromatic leukodystrophy, an illness that slowly robs the body of its nervous system, a little lift.
He died yesterday morning, the Winona Daily News says.
He is survived by a city that gave a damn.
