What kind of country have we become when we can’t even throw gourds anymore?
The World Championship Punkin Chunkin event in Delaware, which raises money for scholarships, has been canceled for the second straight year because organizers have been unable to get required insurance coverage.
Competitors in several categories use whatever mechanical means they can devise to see who can throw a pumpkin farthest.
But an ATV accident in 2011 led to a — wait for it — lawsuit and that was that. That has since been settled out of court, but the group still can’t get insurance at the local speedway where the event has been held.
Organizers are considering moving it out of Delaware to more “regulatory friendly” areas.
