The huge twin smokestacks in Alma, Wis., not far downstream from Lake Pepin, have been a landmark along the Mississippi River since the power station was built in 1947.
The coal-fired plant, operated by the Dairyland Power Cooperative, was one of five different units at Alma Station, the last closing in 2014.
The John P. Madgett power station, just south of Alma, now features the lone smokestack because they blew up the old one this morning.
