Hoofing it from Minnesota to San Francisco

We have a new entry in our ongoing list of people biking across country, running across country, kayaking across the country and — if you noted on 5×8 today — golfing across country.

Nathan Mehlhoff left his parents house in Lakeville this afternoon and started walking to San Francisco.

Why? To see what’s between here and San Francisco, he says on his blog, “Seeing It Slowly.”

My first big destination will be the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. I should reach the Badlands in about 20-30 days. It will take me about 10 days to 2 weeks to get out of Minnesota.

I may be walking over 2300 miles and many may say that I’m crazy or may say that they couldn’t do it, but I would like to invite everyone and anyone from anywhere to walk just 1 mile with me. Walk 10 miles with me if you like, but having the ability to stop our busy lives and walk away from stress and walk the earth is an empowering feeling. If I’m coming through your town, if you see me with my sign walking on the road, if you hear about me and want to meet up with me, I would like to invite you to walk 1 mile with me. I will be posting on the site daily with videos and photos and my location if not 2 or 3 times a day. I will be telling the story of my journey as I go but feel free to ask me about it in person. I will be tweeting (although it is new to me) several times a day. Follow me on twitter, follow my blog, and if you still can’t find me shoot me an email. I will be happy to meet you and have some company.

He says the walk will also help raise money for Feeding America, a hunger relief charity. He got the idea — and some motivation for the walk — after visiting a homeless shelter in Winona as part of a class project.

“I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for people in poverty,” he told Sun Newspapers.

He figures it’ll take four or five months, and has taken time off from Winona State, where he is an English major.
